Hey there,
I’m Nick, one of the two heads here at Nerdcrash. I’m a long time gamer, avid reader, and amateur writer from the US. If you find this blog worth reading, and I hope that you will, then you should have some idea of who’s actually writing these articles, because it gives you a frame of reference for the thought system that forms my writing.
To that end, I tend to be interested in games, books, movies, other mediums, in that order. To give you some idea of my tastes…
- Games: I’ll play a bit of everything, but have an obvious preference for platformers, action games, and JRPGs.
- Books: Mystery and Fantasy are my primary interests, with a smattering of Science Fiction and Horror
- Film/TV: Horror junkie. Love a good mystery show or some original sci-fi. Will dip into other genres on a case by case basis of what happens to look interesting at the time.
I grew up on Nintendo consoles and the PS2, with Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and A Series of Unfortunate Events defining my early reading habits. The last of these books definitely informed my writing style and sense of humor more than I recognized at the time, so I apologize in advance for all the times I will probably go on tangents in the future. More recently, my reading has consisted of such authors as Christie, Asimov, Pratchett, and King, though I have been looking into more up and coming authors in my favorite genres, such as Edgar Cantero and Jane Harper. Favorite games include Yoshi’s Island, Persona 4, EarthBound, Metal Gear Solid 3, Bayonetta, Mass Effect, and Super Mario Odyssey. Favorite films include Young Frankenstein, Toy Story 3, Scream, Halloween, Kill Bill, Heathers, and The Iron Giant. Favorite TV series include The Twilight Zone, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Parks and Rec, Soap, Bojack Horseman, and The Mandalorian. I have dipped into comics a few times, of which my favorites are Scott Pilgrim and Morrison’s Doom Patrol.
While this site was initially conceived as a place for posting news and reviews of traditionally nerdy topics, I would like it to be a bit more than that. I will absolutely spend time on both of those things, but I believe the media we create communicates a piece of who we are and what we believe in, so you can expect me to post critical articles examining different works and trends just as often as I review new things. I am rarely interested in giving some objective review of something, and any reviews I do write will be visibly tinged with my own opinions. In the spirit of deep dives into what makes something tick, I will also be working on series retrospectives, going into the history of different works and how they reached their modern forms. That series will be starting with the Sonic the Hedgehog games, because their reputation and place in the industry are misaligned in a truly fascinating way and I just love the thought of a captive audience to explain my thoughts on this to.
